Morning puer tea

Tea began as a medicine and grew into a beverage. - The Book of Tea

When you drink tea to start your day, you give your body and mind the fuel it needs all morning long. Our favorite morning tea is ripe puer tea because it is energizing and grounding.

Puer Tea

Puer tea, translated as dark tea, comes from the famous tea plant called Camellia sinensis. It is grown and produced in Yunnan, China. The microbial fermentation process makes this type of tea a unique offering amongst green, black, and oolong teas which are more well-known in the West.

Puer comes from tea trees that are five or more feet tall and have roots that extend thirty feet into the ground. Due to the glacial runoff in the region, the soil where the tea trees grow is high in minerals which contributes to the added health benefits of puer. Minerals are essential for health and longevity and are likened to spark plugs in cars.

After harvesting the tea leaves, they are oxidized, fermented, and then aged. Damp leaves are left to wither and oxidize in the hot sun. They are then placed in a pile to ferment and age in either dry or humid conditions for a time ranging from a few months to many years. The fermentation process breaks down the larger tea compounds which allows the body to absorb nutrients easier.

The popularity of puer tea has grown tremendously in the United States due to a growth in tea culture and all things healthy. Specialty tea companies like Global Tea Hut, Jessica Simpson's weight loss journey with tea, and the Kardashians televised puer tea ceremonies have also contributed to the rise in tea consumption. Puer is an ancient form of tea preparation that has become well-loved among urban connoisseurs and those wanting to experience the energetics of tea. It has a robust, earthy taste that is grounding and energizing.

Health Benefits

  1. Increases Energy & Focus - The caffeine in puer tea will give you a boost without the jitters. An 8-oz cup contains about 70mg of caffeine as opposed to an 8-oz cup of coffee which has about 100mg of caffeine.

  2. Reduces Stress - In addition to an energy boost, tea also contains GABA which improves sleep and decreases anxiety. The amino acid l-Theanine is another component of tea that is responsible for its relaxing effects. The harmonious balance of energy and relaxation make tea a healthy beverage for those suffering with adrenal fatigue, anxiety, and heart conditions.

  3. Decreases Cholesterol - Puer tea can help lower the risk of heart disease because it contains microbial lovastatin which lowers bad (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. At the same time, it helps increase the good (HDL) cholesterol.

  4. Improves Digestion - Puer tea helps digest fats because of the lovastatin in the tea leaves.

  5. Assists with Weight Loss - Because puer assists with digestion and the breakdown of fats, it can help with weight loss in addition to exercise and a healthy diet. It can also lower blood sugar and can have a cleansing effect on the body which adds to its weight loss benefits.

  6. Prevents Cancer - High in antioxidants and vitamin C, puer tea can help prevent illnesses and cancer. Oxidized polyphenols work to eliminate disease causing free radicals and stop the production of cancer cells.

Whether at home or on-the-go, drinking tea during the day is easier than many people think. Consider trying puer tea as a great substitute for coffee.
