Ripe Shou Puer

Shou puer is a ripe, black variation that was developed in the 1970s as the demand increased for puer that could be consumed without aging. The tea leaves go through an accelerated fermentation process similar to composting. In turn, compressed tea leaf cakes are steam heated to speed up the aging. This “cooking” creates a darker amber color and deep, earthy taste.

Here are some key characteristics of ripe or shou puer:

Flavor profile: Ripe or shou puer is known for its rich and earthy flavor, with notes of dark chocolate, leather, and damp earth. The tea has a smooth and mellow flavor, with a slightly sweet finish.

Aging: Unlike raw or sheng puer, which is aged naturally over time, ripe or shou puer is intentionally fermented to speed up the aging process. This means that ripe puer can be consumed immediately after production, although it will continue to develop and change over time.

Health benefits: Ripe or shou puer is believed to have a number of health benefits, including improved digestion and cholesterol levels, as well as reduced inflammation and stress. The tea is also high in antioxidants and can help to boost the immune system.

Brewing: Ripe or shou puer can be brewed using a variety of methods, including gong fu style brewing or western style brewing. The tea is typically brewed using water that has been heated to boiling or near boiling, and steeped for several minutes.

Ripe or shou puer is a unique and flavorful tea that offers a taste of the rich tea culture of China. Whether you're a seasoned tea drinker or new to the world of puer, ripe puer is a great option for those who are looking for a rich and complex tea experience.
